What is Artificial Insemination?

Artificial Insemination is also known as Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI). It is often used as a first-line treatment for couples with unexplained infertility.

A couple may benefit from IUI if:

  • The female partner has an ovulation disorder and has been unable to get pregnant with only the ovulation inducing fertility drugs
  • The female partner has cervical factor infertility, such as scarring, cervical abnormalities or problems with cervical mucus
  • The male partner has a lower sperm count, low sperm motility or poor morphology
  • The male partner has ejaculation problems
  • The couple is using donor sperm to conceive
  • There is no known cause of infertility in either partner or both partners

The process of IUI involves the placing of washed sperms, through the cervix, directly into the uterine cavity. The IUI procedure bypasses the cervix and places sperms directly into the uterus closer to the fallopian tubes, around the time of ovulation. This way, there is a better chance that more sperm will make their way and reach the egg.

This procedure can be performed during a natural menstrual cycle or with artificial hormone stimulation.

What is In Vitro Fertilization?

IVF is a method of assisted reproduction in which the male partner’s sperm and the female partner’s eggs are combined and fertilized outside the body.

  • Your IVF Specialist may recommend IVF if:
  • There is no known cause of infertility in either partner or both partners
  • Female partner has blocked fallopian tubes or pelvic adhesions
  • Failed 2-4 cycles of ovarian stimulation with IUI
  • Severe male factor infertility (low sperm count or low motility)
  • Advanced female age
  • Reduced ovarian reserve
  • Severe endometriosis

During an IVF procedure, the female eggs are taken from the body and are fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then placed back into the female partner’s body for conception.
